The Hellacopters have unveiled the new song “Leave a Mark,” the first single from the Swedish rock band’s recently announced new album, Overdriver, set for release on January 25th.
If the first few lines of the first verse sound familiar, the lyrics are taken exactly from Bruce Springsteen’s hit “Dancing in the Dark.” From there, the lyrics are original, although the chorus also pays homage to the Springsteen song: “I wanna start a fire/ I want to light up the dark/ Make them see my gospel/ I want to change the face of the world/ And leave a mark.”
A press release for the single makes no mention of Springsteen, but there’s no doubt that “Leave a Mark” is a lyrical nod to the Born in the U.S.A. single. Sonically, the song falls into the Hellacopters’ familiar garage-rock sound that’s more in the vein of proto-punk legends like MC5 and The Stooges.

Overdriver is the follow-up to 2022’s Eyes of Oblivion, and marks the Hellacopters ninth album overall. The band will kick off a European tour in late January, and jump aboard Little Steven’s Undergound Garage cruise in May.
