Tool singer Maynard James Keenan names his favorite tool

Tool singer Maynard James Keenan has finally answered the question on everyone’s mind: “What’s his favorite tool?”

To his credit, the singer gave an answer during an appearance on comedian Bert Kreischer’s Bertcast podcast. The question actually came from Kreischer’s college-aged daughter Ila, a big fan of Tool who texted the query to her dad to ask on her behalf.

After giving a mocking laugh, Keenan answered seriously, “A battery-operated pneumatic nail gun,” adding a sound effect. He continued, “I remember when it was like the canister and it would clog up and get all fucked up. The newer ones, you can charge the battery, and you can get some shit done.”

Keenan wrapped up his answer humorously with, “Does that answer your fuckin’ question?”

During another point in the conversation, Kreischer attempted to give his take on the difference between Tool and A Perfect Circle by saying, “I feel like Tool was more heavy, more like blue, darker blue and black, whereas A Perfect Circle seemed like more purple and yellow. Does that make sense?”

Keenan responded, “Do you smoke a lot of marijuana?,” before adding, “The difference between those bands is the wig,” leading Kreischer to crack up laughing.

Over the course of one hour and forty minutes, Keenan touched on a number of other topics with Kreischer. The full episode can be seen below.

Fans can also catch Keenan at Tool’s own “Live in the Sand” festival in the Dominican Republic and during the band’s Latin America tour, both taking place in March. After that, he’ll front A Perfect Circle and Puscifer on the “Sessanta V2.0” North American tour beginning in late April (pick up tickets here).

Keenan also recently guested on the 1000th episode of Kyle Meredith With… alongside “Sessanta” tour mate Les Claypool of Primus.
