Toyota Reveals 80s-Inspired 4Runner TRD Surf Concept

Toyota’s latest reveal, the 4Runner TRD Surf Concept, merges the classic spirit of the original 4Runner with modern design, debuting at the 2024 SEMA Show. Inspired by Southern California’s 80s surf culture, the 4Runner TRD Surf Concept pays homage to the brand’s legacy as a popular vehicle for beach-loving adventurers.

Crafted at Toyota’s Motorsports Garage, the TRD Surf Concept taps into the essence of the iconic, open-air, first-generation 4Runner, boasting a retro-style removable roof and a nod to the brand’s roots. “The 2025 4Runner reminded me of the original, with its rugged look,” said Marty Schwerter, Director of Operations at Toyota’s Motorsports Technical Center. Schwerter and his team tackled several engineering challenges to create a convertible-style SUV with seamless styling and functional features, like the flip-forward passenger seat and added width for stability.

Under the hood, the 4Runner TRD Surf Concept is powered by Toyota’s iForce 2.4L turbocharged engine, delivering 278 hp with 317 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The full-time four-wheel drive system, robust long-travel suspension and 37-inch tires allow the TRD Surf Concept to tackle both the highway and sand dunes effortlessly.

Inside, the concept’s waterproofed interior, soft flooring and a roof rack surfboard “Travel Quiver” solidify its beach-ready design. The 4Runner TRD Surf Concept will be on display at Toyota’s SEMA booth, with plans for broader production yet to be announced at the time of writing.
