During the Paris Fashion Week after-party for Maison Yoshiki Paris, the brand of Japanese artist and designer Yoshiki, the “godfather of streetwear” and fragment design founder Hiroshi Fujiwara made a surprise appearance. The duo announced that they had formed a musical group called Bluebyrds.
The first single from the project, “Nothing,” was released that evening. A week later, the namesake debut Bluebyrds EP is out, fusing electronic music with pulsing, ambient sounds.
The project marks a return for Fujiwara, who got his start as one of Japan’s first hip-hop DJs in the 1980s. He continues to perform and collaborate with musical artists today.
“A few years ago, we ran into each other in Paris and talked about making music together again,” Fujiwara said of his collaboration with Yoshiki. “We’ve been regularly working in the studio since then, creating private recordings. Now, we want to share our unique world with everyone and continue to evolve it.”
Yoshiki said that it’s “an honor to create with Hiroshi Fujiwara, who has an immense influence in the global fashion scene. I’m excited about future developments.”
