Metro Boomin on Drake vs. Kendrick Lamar Beef: “I Have Love and Respect for All My Collaborators”

Metro Boomin spoke on the recent Drake vs. Kendrick Lamar beef during his appearance at the Forbes Under 30 Summit, stating that there’s a mass difference in modern-day rap feuds and those in the early days of hip-hop.

He shared that “competition” is healthy for hip-hop as it’s always been a competitive genre, adding, “Even if just keeping it on music it’s not serious how everybody tries to make it. Also with hip-hop, there’s a lot of ego involved. You’re supposed to feel like you’re the best.” Metro continued, “So, when [you have] two of the top dogs in the game and they, you know, you both feel like you’re the best. It’s like, okay, now we gotta have a showdown, you know, we saw it with JAY-Z and Nas before.”

“But I just feel like more today, is it’s more like stan culture. It’s like, it makes it kinda weird cause like back in the day, like JAY-Z and Nas went at it but like I was a fan of both of them, you know, and most people were and it was like, okay, it’s okay.”

However, the producer clarified that he and all the individuals in hip-hop want to contribute to and “uplift” the genre rather than harm it, and he has nothing but praises for the people he works with. “As far as me being diplomatic, it’s just entertainment,” Metro shared. “I have love and respect for all my collaborators. I just want to see everyone do the best and help push this forward. We’re all here to deposit in and uplift this genre.”
