Ford Explores In-Car Ad System That Could Monitor Conversations for Keywords

According to a recently published U.S. Patent, Ford is developing a controversial new technology that could tailor in-car advertisements by listening to conversations between passengers. While the patent application was originally filed last year, it has only recently been published and outlines a strategy to deliver customized ads based on occupant dialogue, driving routes and historical data.

Dubbed “in-vehicle advertisement presentation,” the system would monitor conversations for keywords and analyze data like the car’s location and speed to determine which ads to serve. For example, if a driver mentions grocery shopping, the technology could display related ads through the vehicle’s interface. Ford’s system would use existing software and require no new hardware, further enhancing its ability to predict user behavior and deliver personalized advertisements. It could also collect data from third-party apps to refine the ad experience.

In a comment on the patent, a Ford’s spokesperson shared “Submitting patent applications is a normal part of any strong business.” They emphasized that the application doesn’t necessarily reflect current business plans but protects intellectual property. However, the patent lacks details on how Ford plans to safeguard the data collected by the system, which has raised privacy concerns. At the time of writing, Ford has not issued a public statement on plans for the patented system and there’s a possibility it will never go into play.
