Fotografiska and Mass Appeal To Present Immersive Hip-Hop Exhibition

Fotografiska Berlin will open the exhibition Hip Hop: Conscious, Unconscious, presented in collaboration with Mass Appeal. This retrospective celebrates the transformative power of hip-hop, tracing its evolution from the Bronx in the 1970s to its global impact today. Featuring over 200 striking photographs by more than 50 renowned artists, the exhibition highlights iconic figures and pivotal moments that have shaped the culture.

The exhibition’s core story explores how hip-hop has united people, provided a platform for marginalized voices, and catalyzed social and political change by confronting oppression. Beyond a chronological account, the photographs showcase hip-hop as a revolutionary tool for empowerment, revealing its conscious movement and enduring influence on pop culture.

The German section, “Hip Hop in Deutschland,” offers a unique dimension to the exhibition, charting the development of German rap through five distinct phases. From the early hip-hop jams of the 1980s to the diverse and innovative scene of today, this extension combines documentary photography, portraits, and interactive elements, providing a fresh take on the cultural and political impact of rap in Germany.

Fotografiska and Mass Appeal invite visitors to experience the transformative power of this exhibition, honoring the artists who have shaped the history of hip-hop and its far-reaching impact. The exhibition will open on September 20 and will be on view until January 26, 2025.
