KATSEYE has already garnered a cult following – evidenced by upwards of a million listeners on Spotify – despite having only put out two singles. A new Netflix docuseries looks into the reality show-style formation of the K-pop-inspired girl group.
Originally titled The Debut: Dream Academy, Netflix’s Pop Star Academy: KATSEYE sees 20 girls compete to be invited to join the namesake act. The show was announced a year ago and will now be hitting the streamer on August 21.
Formed by HYBE – the management company behind BTS and NewJeans – in partnership with Geffen Records, KATSEYE’s six members officially made their debut in November.
The concept for the show was that it doubled as an experiment in creating a group centered on K-pop methodology but made up of internationally hailing artists. Daniela Avanzini, Lara Rajagopalan and Megan Skiendiel are from the US; Jeong is from South Korea; Sophia Laforteza is from the Philippines and Manon Bannerman is from Switzerland.
120,000 women auditioned for the opportunity to make it onto the show and just 20 were selected. The group of 20 was then whittled down to 10 before the six were selected through a combination of viewer votes and evaluators’ scores following a live show.
The series will offer a behind-the-scenes look at the process, showing viewers the rehearsals and preparation that went into the live show, along with the elimination process.
