In terms of contract situations to monitor, Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb and 49ers receiver Brandon Aiyuk all could be in line for new deals these next few weeks — or lingering drama if they don’t get them.
As always, there are buzzy QB competitions in store as well, highlighted by Russell Wilson vs. Justin Fields in Pittsburgh. Another to keep an eye on is Gardner Minshew vs. Aidan O’Connell in Las Vegas. Meanwhile, Maye, Nix, McCarthy and Penix will all try to push presumed starters as much as possible in their camps, and here’s a wild card: Daniel Jones vs. Drew Lock with the Giants.

Statement from Davante Adams’ agents Kenny Chapman and Frank Bauer regarding the recent trade talk surrounding their client: “This is baseless, unfounded speculation and Davante is expected to be with the Raiders as there has been absolutely no trade talk – period.” pic.twitter.com/wwJ8AOtHEt
Caleb Williams reportedly agrees to 4-year, $39M deal
The No. 1 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft has reportedly agreed to his deal with the Chicago Bears on the same day rookies report to camp.
One is done: Chicago’s No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams is signing a four-year, fully-guaranteed contract worth $39 million that includes a $25.5 million signing bonus and a fifth-year team option, per sources. pic.twitter.com/O6v4m10LNc
It’s unusual for a player as good as Aiyuk to be available, if he will actually be available. If Aiyuk moves, it’s a rare season-shifting move in mid-to-late July.
Brandon Aiyuk has grown into a great WR with 49ers
Brandon Aiyuk, 26, has been with the Niners his entire career. They drafted him with the 25th overall pick in 2020, and he’s produced for them. He has 269 receptions for 3,931 yards and 25 touchdowns for San Francisco over his four-year career. Aiyuk has managed to find a way to materially improve his game every single season, but he took a huge jump forward when Brock Purdy ascended to the starting quarterback position in 2022.
In Aiyuk’s first two seasons with the Niners, which were Purdy-free, he tallied 118 receptions for 1,574 yards and 10 touchdowns. But in his two most recent seasons, in which Aiyuk had Purdy slinging passes his way, he tallied 153 receptions for 2,357 yards and 15 touchdowns.
Could Brandon Aiyuk’s potential holdout prove costly under the fifth-year option?
Regarding Aiyuk and the #49ers– the leverage is held by SF in a case like this. 5th year option players are subject to fines for missing camp as well as preseason games. I believe its $40K per day and about $785K for each preseason game.
Report: 49ers have told teams they don’t intend to trade Brandon Aiyuk
Of course, this could just mean a big enough offer hasn’t come through yet:
Sources: Other teams that have reached out and spoken to San Francisco have been told that the 49ers have no intention of trading disgruntled WR Brandon Ayiuk, who officially has requested a trade. 49ers open training camp next week. pic.twitter.com/vsVCoPvUr1
Report: Rome Odunze, Bears agree to rookie contract
No. 9 overall pick Rome Odunze has agreed to terms with the Bears on a four-year, $22.7 million fully guaranteed rookie deal, per NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero.

Will Brandon Aiyuk’s 49ers request end up like Deebo Samuel?
Brandon Aiyuk is under contract for a little more than $14 million this season. The #49ers survived a trade request from Deebo Samuel. We’ll see if they can find their way through this one from Aiyuk. https://t.co/jKpRuBqOkJ
The 49ers and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk appear headed for a divorce, per NFL Media’s Mike Garafolo:

Despite a recent meeting, the Niners haven’t been willing to engage in negotiations since May so Aiyuk has respectfully asked out. pic.twitter.com/EWxYMvsHch
