Ariana Grande has teamed up with Brandy and Monica for a remix of her song, “the boy is mine” which shares a name with the duo’s 1998 hit.
The original version or the remix never samples Brandy and Monica’s song but reimagines the track for a new audience with a completely different beat and lyrics that make it an unapologetic anthem over a catfight. Brandy and Monica each take a verse with Ariana before the three come together to harmonize the rest of the song. The song is a new version of Grande’s viral unreleased song, “Fantasize,” as she wanted to appease fans who’d been waiting for the aforementioned track to release but still stay true to her current style.
This remix and accompanying lyric video comes after a music video for the original version starring Penn Badgley and featuring an easter egg cameo from Brandy and Monica was released two weeks ago. The (loosely) Batman-inspired video depicts Grande as a cat burglar obsessed with the city’s mayor, played by Badgley, due to a love potion shattering when he was on the TV. Grande obsesses over Badgley until she ends up breaking into his office to find he reciprocates her feelings. The remix lyric video continues this theme with a comic style and features stills from the original music video.
Grande’s eternal sunshine album has had a slow and steady rollout as the first single, “yes, and?” was released back in January before the album itself — the and “we can’t be friends (wait for your love)” music video — were released in March. Grande continues to roll out videos and remixes from the album even as she has been focusing on promoting the upcoming film, Wicked in which she plays Glinda.
