FRESH from scooping a continental award, ancestral musician Zawadi YaMungu is determined to heal people through original African music genre.

Zawadi, who scooped Best Female Musician of the year at Ladies in Media Awards held in Ghana in March, said she’ll release her debut album to show the beauty of Africa.

The 32-year-old musician from Mandeni, KZN, said through her debut album, to be released soon, she’ll honour late African giant Oliver Mtukudzi and late ancestral and choral singer Princess Magogo Buthelezi who is the mother of late Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi and grandmother of internationally acclaimed musician Toya Delazy.

She said they’re in negotiations with Mtukudzi’s family to get permission to do a cover version of his song, Neria to honour him.

Zawadi, whose real name is Nkosingiphile Mpanza, said she’ll honour mothers through the song titled Mama, where she sings in Swahili.

“My debut album will focus more on ancestral music and African roots. I believe in healing people. People need to listen to it.

“When I sing ancestral music, I connect with a higher frequency and heal people. Later, I’ll do commercial music. For now, my ancestors use me to heal people through my ancestral music,” she said.

Zawadi, who made her name when she performed the late Princess Magogo’s hymns during Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi’s memorial service at Ulundi in 2023, said Princess Magogo’s music was introduced to legendary musician Mbuso Khoza.

She said in her album she’s mixed indigenous and modern instruments.

She’ll release her debut single song titled Ngimuhle at the end of June before releasing the album to which she’s busy putting finishing touches.
