Whenever Moses Sumney releases anything, whether it be a single, album or even a recorded performance, there’s always an air of undeniable creative power. But what’s dually exciting to watch is how each release reveals a forward step in the California-raised artist’s catalog. Sumney has released a new single “Vintage” with an accompanying video that suggests a new era may be on its way.
Romantically notalgic, the song underscores feelings of wanting an old relationship back – marked by love, reflection and desire. But where Sumney’s previous works have hovered in an alternative and indie space, “Vintage” takes a closer step into R&B, which is a fitting choice given the song’s focus.
“Do you ever wish we’d redone it?/I kinda think that we should rerun it/I wanna walk it back like Michael/There’s no light but low light without you/I remember how your nectar sweet/Now you got your specter hanging over me/I’ma take it back to 1993/When I get my fingers on a time machine,” Sumney sings in verse one and the refrain.
To bring the song to life, the singer/songwriter sings, contemplates and dances around an old mansion filled with marble floors and European art. Of course, the cut wouldn’t be complete without the old 90s-style R&B singing in the rain scene. It’s all quite vintage.
