‘Squid Game’ Actor Oh Young-Soo Convicted of Sexual Misconduct

‘Squid Game’ Actor Oh Young-Soo Convicted of Sexual Misconduct

South Korean actor Oh Young-Soo has been found guilty of sexual misconduct and sentenced to prison. After playing Oh Il-nam in Netflix’s Squid Game, the actor rose to global fame, winning Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor in a series, along with an Emmy nomination.

The following year, the 79-year-old was charged with sexual misconduct for an incident that occurred in 2017, in which he hugged and kissed a woman’s cheek without her consent. The two were co-starring in a play and had been on a walk together.

The accusations had first been brought up by the victim in 2021 but police had dropped the case that same year, citing a lack of evidence. It was reopened after the woman filed an appeal and Oh was charged in 2022.

Oh was sentenced to up to eight months in prison, suspended for two years, by the Seongnam Branch of the Suwon District Court. He will also have to compete 40 hours of a sexual violence treatment program.

“The content of the victim’s journal, and the content of her counseling after the incident is consistent with what happened, and her testimonies could not have been given unless she actually experienced it,” the Suwon District Court said.

Oh denied the charges and told reporters outside of the courtroom that he plans to appeal the verdict.
