Monaleo has come a long way since her viral remix of Flo Milli’s “We Not Humping.” She released several singles throughout 2023 and in May, dropped off her debut EP entitled Where The Flowers Don’t Die.
The Houston-hailing artist has returned with her first single of 2024, the witty freestyle, “Don Who Leo.” The track comes with a visual telling the tale of an alcohol-induced evening, from roaming the streets of Houston to winding up at the recording studio.
“Don Who Leo” isn’t a one-off release either. Monaleo has shared that the song is part of a greater freestyle series, “Pink Smole,” where she plans to drop a freestyle every Monday leading up to the release of her sophomore project. That EP is expected to be out later this year, though she hasn’t given fans an exact timeline.
Hypebeast caught up with Monaleo back in December 2022, where the artist spoke about toeing the line between rap and R&B. It’ll be interesting to see the sounds she explores on the forthcoming project.
“I love melodies. I love to sing. I grew up singing in church. I grew up playing in the street. That is really where my heart lies,” she said.
“I definitely can see myself moving into that R&B space pretty soon – maybe not permanently – but delving into it, going back and forth between R&B and hip-hop.”
