The Sammy Davis Jr. limited series will no longer be landing on Hulu.
According to Deadline, the cancellation of the series on Hulu arrives as its parent company, Disney, undergoes a budget cut on content spending. 20th Television is also reportedly planning to bring in “additional high-level talent” before shopping it to prospective buyers.
The series is based on Will Haygood’s biography, In Black and White: The Life of Sammy Davis Jr. and takes inspiration from Alex Haley’s interview of the late entertainer. Its eight episodes will explore Davis’ life “through the lens of his racial identity and his complex relationship with the Black community.”
Elijah Kelley takes on the lead role of Davis with Kimberly Harrison serving as showrunner and executive producer. Lee Daniels and Thomas Westfall will write the script and executive produce, with Daniels helming the first two episodes. Marc Toberoff and Pam Williams will also executive produce while Haygood and Kelley will produce.
