'The Marvels' Is Now the Lowest Grossing MCU Film in History

The Marvels are officially the lowest-grossing film in the history of the MCU. The superhero sequel reached only $80 million USD in North America and $197 million USD globally just after four weeks on the big screen.

While there is usually hope that the busy holiday season will give the downfall an optimistic outlook, Disney does not appear to believe so. The studio wrote a statement to the press over the weekend stating, ” With The Marvels‘ box ffice now winding down, we will stop weekend reporting of international/global grosses on this title.” However, the film is not leaving theaters just yet. The $220 million USD-plus budgeted film is expected to be in theaters through New Year’s however, the memo signals that the studio does not expect great results from the film. Overall, the movie fell to 11th place on the box office making just $2.4 million USD in its fourth week.

The Marvels originally opened on November 10 with $46 million USD domestically, also landing MCU’s worst debut in history. Sine the start, the film was a misfire, earning its biggest second-weekend drop of the series. The film was directed by Nia DaCosta and stars Brie Larson as Captain Marvel, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau and Iman Vellani as Ms. Marvel. The film is also the first Marvel film failed to cross the $100 million USD mark. On why the film had a poor theatrical performance, Disney CEO Bob Iger said, “The Marvels‘ was shot during COVID. There wasn’t as much supervision on the set, so to speak, where we have executives [that are] really looking over what’s being done day after day after day.” He also added, “We got to the point where if a film didn’t do a billion dollars in global box office, we were disappointed. That’s an unbelievably high standard, and I think we have to get more realistic.”
