X Ambassadors frontman Sam Nelson Harris joins Kyle Meredith to talk about the band’s new single, “Deep End,” which soundtracks Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.
The hit-making songwriter discusses writing for the Jason Momoa-starring superhero movie and being pushed to include more aquatic references (“You can’t go wrong with a water metaphor!”), as well as what draws him to write for films (his work has also been featured on soundtracks for Transformers, The Call of the Wild, Suicide Squad, and more).

Harris goes on to dig into his debut solo album, why does everything make me cry?, and the latest developments regarding the next X Ambassadors album. He also explains how chasing chart-topping singles ended up hampering his own creative process.
“I’d find my myself trying to chase these hits, and I’d have to snap out of it and be like, ‘What are you doing? This is bad,’” he says. “The biggest lesson that I learned was: if you’re trying to write a hit and you write a song and you don’t really like it and [that one] becomes a hit — it feels good, but it’s a little confusing… If you do the same thing again, write a song and you don’t really like it, but everyone else says it’s a hit, and then it comes out and it’s not — that feels awful.”
