2023 is the unofficial year of Picasso, as galleries and museums around the world are celebrating the prolific artist on the 50th anniversary since his death. On view in New York, Almine Rech is hosting a group exhibition dubbed The Echo of Picasso, bridging a dialogue between Picasso’s legacy and the contemporary artists working today.
The exhibition is presented under two frameworks: a look at Picasso’s career while he was alive and challenged by his peers, while the latter part of the show focuses on the living artists who echo the Spanish artist’s oeuvre. Drawing from its roster, works include a bronze sculpture by Claire Tabouret, a frantic cubist painting by George Condo, as well as works by Urs Fischer, David Hockney, and Jeff Koons.
Decades on, “Picasso became a voluminous encyclopedia of ideas and images for artists,” noted professor Michael Fitzgerald in the Museo Picasso Malaga catalog, “The Echo of Picasso.” The exhibition will be on view until December 16 in Tribeca. See the full list of exhibiting artists below.
For the latest Through the Lens, Hypeart spoke with Hassan Hajjaj on how he sparks new dialogues by fusing his North African heritage with Western iconography.
