David Beckham is getting the Netflix documentary treatment; BECKHAM follows the life and career of the iconic soccer star both on and off the field. Netflix unveiled the four-part docuseries’ first official trailer today, and based on the nearly three-minute glimpse into the series, BECKHAM will answer all of our currently unanswered questions.
Per the official logline: “Beckham is one of the most known names on the planet, yet few people know who he really is.” This is where BECKHAM comes in.
“I never really did well at school because all I wanted to do was play football,” Beckham recalls at the opening of the trailer, which starts all the way back at the athlete’s humble beginnings.
The Fisher Stevens-directed and John Battsek-produced docuseries focuses on Beckham’s relationship with Victoria Beckham, and how his once narrow scope of solely soccer rapidly expanded as he reached a monumental level of media attention and fame. While David asserts, “It definitely didn’t change me”, another source disputes that claim. “Well, he changed. There’s no doubt about that.”
“My manager kept saying ‘Try and keep it under wraps’,” Victoria recounts, opening up on the early stages of the couple’s relationship. “We would meet in car parks – and that’s not as seedy as it sounds.”
BECKHAM will also explore the athlete’s infamous altercation with Manchester United manager, Alex Ferguson after Ferguson threw a boot at Beckham’s eye. “I don’t give up easy,” Beckham asserts as the trailer comes to a close. “I don’t give up.” Stream it in full above.
The docuseries consists of four episodes, each of which will run for 60 minutes, and a stacked lineup of special guests from across Beckham’s personal and professional life. All four parts land on Netflix on October 4.
