Manchester United is in the midst of the Premier League Summer Series, hopping across the United States’ biggest stadiums for friendlies against Arsenal, Wrexham, Real Madrid and Dortmund. Though the matches are friendly, the stakes are high — any football fanatic knows there’s no such thing as a non-heated Man U and Arsenal match — and the new home and away kits are on full display to huge audiences.
Hypebeast caught a few moments with Marcus Rashford, Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw and Alejandro Garnacho ahead of one of the matches, and spoke to the fearsome foursome to get their thoughts on the new kits, soccer style (all four prefer long-sleeve shirts), their favorite music and more.
Manchester United’s home and away kits for the season were recently revealed. What are your thoughts on them? Do you enjoy the that jersey culture is becoming a fashion trend?
Marcus Rashford: It’s nice to always have innovative ideas for the shirts. They’re getting better and better every year. I like the fashion aspect of it as well — we want to look good on the pitch, so when we’re out and about in different countries and see people wearing the shirts as part of a casual outfit it affirms that we do.
Luke Shaw: This year’s kits feel very retro. They’re different from what we’ve had in the past, and I like different. I’ve been at the club for nine years now, and this is one of the most unique kits we’ve had in that time. Hopefully we can have some good memories in the away kit.
Lisandro Martinez: All of our jerseys are amazing. Amazing club, amazing kits. Everything is good.
United has become known as a club with some of the best-dressed players in the game. Does your squad have a competitive mentality when it comes to fashion, either with each other or with other clubs?
Luke Shaw: There are a lot of lads here that are really, really into fashion. I’m getting dragged into it now as well [laughs]. Obviously we’ve signed Mace [Mason Mount] who’s really big on fashion. He’s rubbed off on us, and now a lot of the other lads are taking more care with how they dress and are getting a deeper understanding of how big fashion is these days.
Marcus Rashford: Everyone’s got their own style. They express themselves through the clothes they wear and we’ve got a lot of different characters on the team, which means a lot of different styles.
Alejandro Garnacho: We don’t really compete with each other, but if someone does dress a bit odd we’ll definitely roast them [laughs].
Do you have a fashion item that you cherish the most or always have to have with you?
Lisandro Martinez: Not necessarily. I always follow my feelings. One day I’ll be in a suit, the next day something a lot more casual.
Marcus Rashford: My trainers.
Luke Shaw: Watches.
What’s your ultimate pregame travel fit?
Marcus Rashford: Anything Louis Vuitton.
Luke Shaw: That’s hard … probably a tracksuit.
What are you listening to currently?
Marcus Rashford: Lil Baby.
Lisandro Martinez: Bad Bunny.
Luke Shaw: Drake.
Alejandro Garnacho: Bad Bunny.
