Ford Revives ’70s “Free Wheeling” Aesthetic for a Special Edition of 2024 Bronco Sport

Ford Revives ’70s “Free Wheeling” Aesthetic for a Special Edition of 2024 Bronco Sport

Ford’s new Bronco is inspired by the automaker’s decades-old Free Wheeling offerings.

Beginning in the late 1970s, Ford offered a Free Wheeling package on a few of its vehicles, an upgrade that included a blacked-out grill, black bumpers, black side mirrors and “trick wheel” covers that made it look as if the wheels were floating underneath the vehicle. The package was merely cosmetic and made waves across the F-100, F-150, Bronco, Econoline van and more but was only available for about five years.

For a special edition of its 2024 Bronco Sport, Ford is reviving the classic aesthetic with a sunset-inspired design. The black car comes with complimentary black finishes on the grilles, mirrors and bumpers, while the black interior features red and orange pinstriping. Rather than “trick wheels,” the 17-inch matte black wheels feature a red and white color detailing.

The most nostalgic aspect of the Bronco Sport Free Wheeling edition is an ombre-style pinstripe design of red, orange and yellow gradients. The graphic was used throughout the ‘70s in Free Wheeling offerings, lending itself to a beachy aesthetic designed to draw in younger customers.

“Bronco customers appreciate its heritage,” Bronco Sport Marketing Manager Jason Hyde said. “After such a great response to the reimagined Bronco Sport Free Wheeling project vehicle in 2021, we decided to bring this special edition that ties Bronco Sport to its fun loving roots.”

For those interested in the special edition Bronco Sport Free Wheeling, ordering has opened across the 2024 Ford Bronco Sport lineup.
