This clip depicts a man going through a heartbreak as he remembers the best moments he spent with a girl that is no longer with him romantically. He shows his regret with emotion while alone as visions of him and his ex show some of the good times when he once held her, proposed to her with a diamond ring, and played pool alongside her.
Meanwhile, clips of Thompson showing off his southern personality and performing the song with a backup band are interspersed throughout to emphasize the message of the tune.
“Cause there’s only two bars in this ninety proof town / So many roads to drive down / There’s only one way to your best friend’s house / She’d be telling you to swear me off now / Spinning my wheels / Hate how this feels / Damn, I wish I didn’t care / You sure as hell ain’t in the bottom of this drink / You must be out there / In the middle of God knows where,” the American Idol Season 20 winner and father to son, Walker Lee, belts out the lyrics of the chorus with passion, showing fans just why he deserved to win the Idol crown.
The Song Serves As The Title Track To His Debut EP
Of “Middle of God Knows Where,” Thompson previously told Pop Culture, “That song, particularly, I wrote when I first came to Nashville with a couple of people, man. That song was just something I was going through. Everybody loves a good breakup song anyways, but that was something I was going through truly. It felt like it was something that I wanted to say, I guess. It turned out being one of those songs that felt like me, production-wise also.”
“Middle of God Knows Where” serves as the title track for Thompson’s debut EP of the same name, which dropped on June 9. The video, meanwhile, offers fans the first of four videos to be released from the heart-hitting project.
“I may very well be having my very first official music video coming out tomorrow, can’t wait for y’all to see it!! Stay tuned..,” Thompson wrote on Instagram, sharing a sneak peek behind-the-scenes photo of the music video set-up.
The Song Showcases Thompson’s Growth As A Songwriter
Co-written with Alison Veltz and producer Eric Arjes, “Middle of God Knows Where” also shows Thompson’s evolution in songwriting as he continues to hone his musical arm.
Similarly, his debut EP showcases his noticeable growth as an artist. The six-track project includes Thompson’s exceptional cover of Rihanna’s “Stay,” which he performed more than once during his journey on American Idol, “Make You Rich,” and his hit single “One Day Tonight.”
“Half of the songs I did not write, half of the songs I did. It’s stuff that we got together fast. My single’s on there, my very first single, ‘One Day Tonight.’ That’s obviously a really important song to me, man. Then it goes into the songs that I’ve put out already, stuff that people are already familiar with like ‘Make You Rich,’” Thompson shared of the songs on the EP.
He continued, “I love that song because I felt like that song was just… I loved it because it was me. It felt like it made me think of my little boy and my family. That’s why I love that song so much. ‘Stay’ was a really big point, a really big piece of my life, man, on the show that was a big turning point for me. So I wanted people to feel that too. Also, coming from my very first EP. Then there’s some love songs in there, breakup songs.”
