The recognition is in celebration of his commitment to preserving and promoting African music and culture, which has seen him excel as a singer, percussionist, producer and composer.
The award-winning singer was named alongside other accomplished recipients in different fields, including film, business, athletics, journalism, law, fashion, health, and more.
Since his arrival in the UK in 1999, Seckou Keita has established himself as the foremost kora player. He initially gained prominence by performing with Afro-Celtic band Baka Beyond and played a pivotal role in establishing the UK’s first kora examination course at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London.
He has released 12 albums as a leader and co-leader, and collaborated with renowned artists, including Cuban pianist Omar Sosa, Africa Express, Paul Weller, and many others.
“I am extremely proud to be receiving this honorary degree from Nottingham Trent University,” Seckou Keita said “I dedicate the degree to my mum, Bintou Cissokho, grandfather, Jali Kemo Cissokho, my uncle Solo Cissokho, and to all the griots and musicians around the world who are quietly and humbly passing on their wisdom, their culture, their traditions and their immense skill to the next generation.”
His other accolades include three Songlines Music Awards and several BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, including Musician of the Year.
