When Hyundai revealed its IONIQ 5 family electric car in early 2021, it went on to receive critical acclaim for more than just its EV credentials. For example, the styling was a throwback to the 1980s, sporting pixelated headlights and tail lamps with plenty of angles carving out a square-ish body and aesthetic, while inside, Hyundai upped the ante with its interior space. Now, the South Korean marque heads to Goodwood Festival of Speed to debut the all-new Hyundai IONIQ 5 N, the beefed-up, sporty, performance-focused version that’s set to rival the KIA EV6 GT, powerful Tesla Model Y variants, and more.
In N spec, the IONIQ 5 comes with a suite of tricks up its sleeves. Hyundai defines this in three areas: “Corner Rascal,” “Racetrack Capability,” and “Everday Sportscar.” The first sees body and chassis reinforcements, adding torsional rigidity and a direct steering feel for something akin to rally-esque all-wheel-drive cornering. The second implies the car’s power, which now sits at 650 PS, while the latter component is about driving feels, comprising “N Active Sound” that’s reminiscent of internal combustion engine cars.
Elsewhere, “N Grin Boost” maximizes acceleration by a power increment of 10 seconds, adding a burst of energy when necessary (like overtaking or coming out of a bend), and “N Launch Control” provides three different traction levels, making sure you hit it off the line like a pro every time.
As for EV elements, the car can charge from 10% to 80% in 18 minutes, while regenerative braking helps on the drives between charges. Other standout elements include the 0-62 MPH time of 3.4 seconds, the 161 MPH top speed, and of course, Hyundai N’s signature “Performance Blue” hue.
