The NHS trust has publicly apologized for the treatment MF DOOM received at St. James Hospital prior to his death.
Chief medical officer Dr, Hamish McLure shared the apology following an inquest hearing, where DOOM’s wife Jasmine Dumile detailed the care he received at the Leeds hospital. “I would like to offer our sincere condolences to Daniel’s family, friends and fans at this difficult time. I apologise that the care he received was not to the standard we would expect,” he said. “Following his sad death we undertook a serious incident investigation and the report has been shared with Daniel’s family. As a result we have put in place a number of actions and the wider learning from what happened is to be used as a teaching topic in a number of different clinical specialities. We also support the coroner’s recommendation for clearer national guidance and awareness in this area.”
The Guardian adds that assistant coroner Janine Wolstenholme revealed that the hospital’s care plan “was not sufficiently detailed” and that the medical staff received a “false reassurance” about the artist’s health when his condition was seemingly improving. She further stated that the hospital should have reviewed DOOM’s condition when he reported that the swelling was getting worse, however she was unable to determine whether his collapse was avoidable. His deteriorating health on October 31, 2020 — the day of his death — was described by Wolstenholme as a “rare event,” although she noted that the reaction to the prescribed ACE inhibitors is more common in smokers (DOOM was “a moderate smoker”) and people of African-Caribbean descent.
Wolstenholme confirmed that the trust recognized that the doctors at St. James did not ask for “specialist input” from an immunology expert. She apologized to Jasmine and culminated the inquest with “a narrative verdict” addressing the issues highlighted by Jasmine and her lawyers.
