Coi Leray Shows Us Her Manga-Verse in “Make My Day” Video

Coi Leray Shows Us Her Manga-Verse in "Make My Day" Video

Hot off COI‘s release a few weeks ago, Coi Leray is opening up her vibrant world to us once again: this time, it’s an anime-inspired one. In the music video for “Make My Day,” Coi steps into her anime-alter-ego-form and, as shown through a series of enticing visuals, journeys through the boisterous cartoonish universe – dodging rogue basketballs, scoring threes on villains and keeping up with her Meta messages along the way.

The David Guetta-produced beat, which samples Technotronic’s “Pump Up the Jam”, bounces in the background as Coi begins her bars and enters into her virtual reality. She finds herself face-to-face with a squad of monsters on a basketball court; just seconds later, the rapper – hot pink knee-high boots, floor-length braid and all – is skirting around the towering villains and scoring effortless dunks.

Coi also finds herself squaring up against an unruly basketball-shooting machine (which she successfully outruns and out-cartwheels) and a living, breathing pile of trash (whom she is able to defeat after reading her reaffirming messages from friends.) The rapper scores a final winning dunk as the video comes to a close.

Colorful and captivating, the video’s animation was not a solo venture. For part of Meta’s “It’s Your World” campaign, which has also featured KidSuper and Jordan Clarkson, Coi enlisted the help of Japanese manga artist and illustrator Acky Bright, and game illustrator Isago Fukuda to nail down the engaging visuals. Emmy-award-winning French director Fx Goby offered his illustrative expertise to the project as well.

“Becoming the main character in my own anime film really opened up the opportunity for me to pay homage to the arts and culture that so many of us are inspired by,” Coi tells Hypebeast. Stream the video for “Make My Day” above.
