Tokyo is gearing up for one of the biggest art weeks in recent memory with the launch of the Tokyo Gendai fair, slated for July 7 to 9. As one of the preeminent players in the contemporary scene, NANZUKA will be ones to watch in the inaugural edition, but back at its flagship spaces, the gallery is also set to unveil a new solo exhibition by Stickymonger.
Entitled D.D.D, the Korean-born, New York-based artist will present a series of uniquely shaped canvases that are conceptually inspired by the sound of a busy telephone signal. Stickymonger, whose real name is Joohee Park, chose to capture the excitement and anticipation of a telephone call through fuzzy spray-painted scenes that hark to some of her favorite movies — from Clueless, 2001: A Space Odyssey to The Royal Tenenbaums and Night on the Earth, where each figure is depicted mid call to imbue a feeling of nostalgia.
Notably inspired by surrealist masters, such as Italian artist Giorgio de Chirico and Japanese animations from the 1970s and ’80s, Stickymonger captures the fleeting nature of memory in each of her anime style scenes. “Whenever I see a movie or animation I always like when people don’t understand the ending,” she told us in a past interview, adding, “I just want to capture these never-ending moments or feelings that inspire me.”
The exhibition will feature eight new paintings in total across both NANZUKA’s 2G location in Shibuya, as well as the 3110NZ by LDH Kitchen in Meguro. D.D.D will be on view starting on July 18 until September 3.
