Mark Zuckerberg and Meta have officially launched its Twitter rival app, Threads. To kick things off, Zuckerberg posted to the text-based app, “Let’s do this. Welcome to Threads.”
While it was set to launch on Thursday morning, the app hit stores a day earlier for users across the world. Threads is now available on the Apple App Store, Google Play Store and as well as online as a website as threads.net. Since the announcement from a couple of days ago, Meta saw its shares increase, rising 3% on Wednesday. In an Instagram blog post, the platform wrote, “Our vision with Threads is to take what Instagram does best and expand that to text, creating a positive and creative space to express your ideas.”
As of now, Threads is the most serious competitor to Twitter. According to Zuckerberg, Threads surpassed five million signups in the first four hours. In the first two hours, the app received two million signups on the App Store and shows no signs of slowing down. Zuckerberg also tweeted for the first time in a decade to celebrate his Twitter rival with a meme. Twitter has been on life support since Elon Musk acquired the company for $44 billion USD. It battle between Threads and Twitter is only just unfolding and it remains to be seen how Musk and his team retaliate.
