Authorities in Coffee County, Tennessee reported an uptick in false 911 calls due to a faulty iPhone safety feature, according to local newspaper WRKN.
This past weekend saw approximately 80,000 attendees flood the county to attend the Bonnaroo music festival and during the event, there were reportedly five times the amount of false 911 calls than average.
The fake calls were traced back to Apple’s car crash detection feature, which automatically alerts 911 when a device experiences rapid movement. In fact, attendees were simply energetically dancing and there was no real emergency. The feature is included in the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro, as well as the latest Apple Watches.
Authorities confirmed that they were able to debunk the false calls and ensure that no real emergencies were taking place on the festival grounds. They also alerted attendees, asking them to turn off the feature while dancing.
