Ben Sanders’ Giant Bottle Cap Artworks Take Over Marta Gallery

Ben Sanders' Giant Bottle Cap Artworks Take Over Marta Gallery

Ben Sanders is a Los Angeles-based artist best known for creating surreal compositions that float in between figuration and abstraction. Much of his pictorial references stem from the images he observed growing up, from Hollywood set props, Chinese hard candy, motorized tools, Taiwanese apple soda — ad infimum. Marta gallery in Los Angeles is featuring the latest solo exhibition by American pop artist, entitled New Cap.

Standout pieces in the show include Sander’s decade-long bottle cap series, in which he creates exaggerated compositions made of vibrant enameled steel works that probe into everyday visual lexicon. Aesthetically, each bottle cap shifts from kaleidoscopic depictions of flowers and astrological signs to sci-fi renditions of biological figures and the endless visuals that often go overlooked.

“There is both keen joy and intrigue in the images that populate the post-human landscape of which Sanders is so fond, and his electric palette brightens our consideration of this most solastalgic moment, which asks—rightly so—for our constant energy and attention,” wrote a release by Marta.

Also on view are smaller paper-based studies in which Sanders maps out his preparation for the larger bottle caps on view. New Cap opened last week and runs through July 30.

Elsewhere, a mysterious sculpture by Danny Cole surfaces atop the NYC High Line.
