As such, we decided to ask experts whether it is advisable to have butter coffee.
Butter coffee, also known as bulletproof coffee, is a beverage made by blending coffee with unsalted, grass-fed butter and medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil. “This creamy concoction was popularised by American author Dave Asprey, who claims it can increase energy, promote mental clarity, and support weight loss,” said N Lakshmi, senior dietician, Kamineni Hospitals, Hyderabad.
According to her, butter coffee offers sustained energy with caffeine and healthy fats promoting alertness, and its high-fat content may aid appetite control, reducing calorie intake.

“As the fitness and wellness industry continues to evolve, new trends emerge that promise to optimise our health and energy levels. One such trend is butter coffee, a beverage gaining popularity for its potential benefits in enhancing morning routines,” Lakshmi said. Users claim enhanced mental performance and cognitive clarity due to MCT oil’s potential brain health support, she added.
However, the flip side of butter coffee is that it is high in calories, lacks essential nutrients, and effects can vary individually, remarked Lakshmi. “Consider the suitability for low-calorie diets, weight loss goals, and personal digestion and energy levels,” the dietician said.
Though there have been claims that butter and MCT oil help with cognitive function, recent research has shown that there is no difference in the cognitive or memory performance between drinkers of butter coffee and black coffee, said Dr Esther Sathiaraj, AGM- clinical nutrition and dietetics, HCG Bangalore. “The butter coffee typically would provide 250kcal, but lacks vitamins, antioxidants and other essential nutrients that the body needs,” added Dr Sathiaraj.

According to Lakshmi, it varies based on your goals and preferences. “Butter coffee can be a convenient and satisfying morning boost, but intense exercise or balanced nutrition may call for a proper meal instead,” Lakshmi noted.
