MLS Launches Juneteenth-Inspired Charity Auction

The month of June has been an exciting one for the MLS – led by news of the legendary Lionel Messi signing with Inter Miami. At its halfway point in the season, teams are making a push in the standings to land a playoff spot. Elsewhere, the league has prepared its latest Juneteenth initiative — “The Seeds We Plant. The Flowers We Share.”

Teaming up with Black Players For Change, artist Gianni Lee and photographer Mel D. Cole, 29 one-of-one collectible jerseys have been designed and put up for auction. Signed by players of each of the league’s 29 clubs, the jerseys feature artwork from Lee on the back and sleeve. Speaking to the collaboration, Lee shared that “By incorporating my “blue hand” motif, I aimed to narrate the tale of African cultural unity in the diaspora and illustrate how it continues to flourish, akin to a plant, within the fabric of American society each passing day.” Proceeds from the auction benefit organizations that support and uplift Black communities in MLS markets.

For those interested in participating in the MLS’ “The Seeds We Plant. The Flowers We Share” Juneteenth charity auction initiative, bidding has already begun via MLSAuctions and will end on June 28. In addition to this, a run of patches and numbers are up for sale on the Black Players For Change website.
