It’s always a special homecoming of sorts when George Clinton plays Detroit, and he’ll do it in a big way this summer, bringing Parliament-Funkadelic to Hart Plaza to headline the African World Festival.

The P-Funk mastermind has been booked as the main attraction at the fest, running July 14-16 as it marks its 40th year. Clinton and company will play the festival’s opening night.

The African World Festival is free for members of the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, which produces the event. Day passes for non-members are $15 for people 13 and up, $10 for college students and seniors, and free for those under 13.

“George Clinton’s music has been projecting us into an AfroFuture since long before that phrase was even coined. It is fitting that this innovator, and the funk music he pioneered, be the rhythm to headline our 40th anniversary celebration,” festival director Njia Kai said in a statement.

Clinton and P-Funk will lead a three-day lineup that includes jazz, hip-hop, R&B and blues alongside food vendors and family activities.

More details on the African World Festival are available at the Wright museum website.
