1. Be frugal

Don’t feel self-conscious if you can’t afford expensive health food brands; healthy eating doesn’t have to break your bank account. Pricier doesn’t always mean better, so look for cheaper alternatives where possible.

2. Discounts

A great way to save money is to pick up a grocery store pamphlet to monitor weekly deals. This way, you can also plan your shopping list ahead of time to suit your budget. Many stores these days have apps where you can keep an eye out for discounts. It may seem like you’re only saving small amounts on certain items, but remember, those few rands and cents all add up in the long run.

3. Watch for buzzwords

Buzzwords like organic and non-GMO are on the labels of many of the healthy food options available to us. But experts say such buzzwords are usually marketing terms that paint a false picture of health.

“Organic is fine if that’s what you want to buy, but for someone who is [budget conscious], that’s not necessary,” dietitian Shana Spence told NPR, according to Cover Media.
