Roshni Chopra shares morning tea recipe for ‘detox and digestion’

Many people wake up craving tea. After all, the simple act of brewing and savouring a cup of chai brings comfort and warmth to the senses. From the first sip, a cup of tea invigorates the spirit and prepares us for the day ahead. But, what better than having tea that will not just refresh you but also aid in detox and digestion after a night-long fast?

Roshni Chopra, who regularly shares tidbits about health, fitness, and other lifestyle choices on social media, believes in something similar as she recently dropped the recipe of her much-loved morning tea which is helpful for body detoxification and digestion. Bonus: It takes just minutes to make!

Ingredients

*Grated ginger – a small piece
*Ajwain – 1 tsp
*Saffron – 2 strands
*Black pepper – 4-5 cloves
*Cloves – 3-4
*Elaichi – seeds of 2 pods

To make the tea, soak these ingredients in boiling water for five minutes. “Strain and sip away,” Roshni said.

Talking about the same, Dr Sonal Bhatnagar, Senior Dietician, Narayana multispeciality hospital, Jaipur said that herbal tea made of grated ginger, ajwain (carom seeds), saffron, black pepper, cloves, and elaichi (cardamom) can indeed be beneficial for digestion and detoxification. “Each of these herbs possesses unique properties that contribute to digestive health. Ginger aids digestion by stimulating the production of digestive enzymes and reducing inflammation in the gut.”

“Ajwain has carminative properties that help relieve bloating. Saffron possesses antioxidants that support detoxification processes in the body. Black pepper aids digestion by increasing the secretion of gastric juices. Cloves have antimicrobial properties and can alleviate digestive discomfort. Elaichi has been traditionally used to promote healthy digestion and freshen breath,” Dr Bhatnagar said, adding that such tea can prove to be a soothing and digestive-boosting beverage, promoting a healthy gut and aiding detoxification processes.

Agreeing, Anjenay Agarwal, Ayurveda Expert and Director, Royal Bee Natural Products Pvt ltd said that the tea suggested by Roshni is excellent for regular detox and digestion since it contains natural spices that aid to improve health and overall well-being. “Morning is the ideal time to drink this detox tea due to the fact that it will help get your digestive system ready for the day. One cup should be plenty for daily consumption as more could cause inflammation or heartburn. Beginners or those who are sensitive to herbs and spices should start with half a cup,” he said.

Dr Bhatnagar suggested consuming this tea in moderation and at appropriate times. “For digestion, it’s recommended to have a cup of herbal tea after meals to aid in the digestion process. However, it’s essential to listen to your body and adjust the quantity according to your tolerance. Start with one cup and see how your body responds. You can gradually increase or decrease the amount based on your comfort level. For detoxification, you can incorporate herbal tea into your daily routine by having one to two cups throughout the day. Spread the consumption evenly to support your body’s natural detoxification processes without overwhelming the system.”

This, however, isn’t the only homemade concoction that can do wonders for your digestion. The Ayurveda expert said that you can achieve great benefits by drinking tea containing Ayurvedic key elements such as dried hibiscus and rose blossoms. “Hibiscus has been ingested for over 1000 years, with studies demonstrating decreased cholesterol and triglyceride levels, lowering the risks of obesity even further. Rose flower includes polyphenols, which have been found to help with diabetes management and promote healthy ageing. This combination of substances is most likely to improve overall digestion while also protecting the liver in the long run,” Agarwal said.
