For Jaeger-LeCoultre’s latest installment of its all-encompassing Made of Makers series, the watchmaking Maison taps into the world of contemporary music compositions. Partnering with breakthrough artist TØKIO M¥ERS, the Swiss watchmaker discovers how classical forms continue to live on through the work of today’s music.
Through a series of collaborations with artists, designers and craftsmen from various creative disciplines, Made of Makers uncovers a dialogue shared between horology and art. Similarly to the watchmakers of La Grande Maison, these artists and innovators build their legacy on the past as a creative foundation and a springboard for their trailblazing work. Having recently debuted its commissioned light installation with Guillaume Marmin, the programme showcases the spheres of contemporary art and gastronomy, now adding music to its portfolio with its latest TØKIO M¥ERS collaboration.
The duo’s collaboration kicks off with a powerful campaign video starring the artist in his studio, showing how he blends sounds and mixes melodies to a fine art. Applying his practice to Jaeger-LeCoultre’s legacy, TØKIO M¥ERS then composed an exclusive soundtrack in his signature style. At ten minutes long, the music piece is tailored to be performed alongside the Maison’s enrapturing light show which tells the story of Golden Ratio in four chapters.
Sharing his inspiration behind the soundtrack, the artist says, “seeing first-hand how Jaeger-LeCoultre operates, experiencing the atmosphere in the Manufacture, seeing all the skills, hearing all of the different sounds, enjoying the calm surroundings of the Vallée de Joux – that gave me a lot of inspiration to draw on. He adds, “And the Golden Ratio theme gave me the idea of translating that mathematical formula of 1.618 [Phi] into a tempo of 161.8 beats per minute.”
In typical Jaeger-LeCoultre style, the Golden Ratio Musical Show will be performed for high-profile guests at Shanghai’s International Film Festival. It will later tour to Los Angeles, London and Dubai respectively, with a film version showing at its own 1931 theater in Hong Kong.
