Players, coaches and family members of the St Walter-St. Benedict School sports teams and Cub Scouts from Tinley Park joined members of American Legion Post 50 in Blue Island in placing flags at the grave sites of military veterans buried in St. Benedict Cemetery in which was founded as a Roman Catholic Cemetery in January of 1887 in Crestwood.
Joe Servantes, an Army veteran of the Vietnam War and Commander of the Blue Island post, noted that veterans of World War I, World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam War, and the Cold War are interred there, many distinguished by Purple Hearts, Bronze Stars, Silver Stars and campaign stars, and including some of who made the ultimate sacrifice.
They were joined by Thomas Madrigal, who served 1969-1970 as a door gunner in a Huey and then as a rifleman, who was gratified to see the young people recognizing the cost of maintaining our freedom, according to a news release.
A group of Rich Township High School District 227 students are traveling in Europe on a 10-day tour with stops in Spain, France and Italy.
The journey and exploration of the Mediterranean shore was described in a news release from the district as a trip of a lifetime offering a chance for the students to learn about the culture and history of Europe while experiencing the historic landmarks of Rome, the art of Florence, Italy and the charm of France.
The group from Rich Township includes students Christopher Amos, Keiko Bennett, Anthony Cotton, Axel Guerrero, Ronia Minter, Akyrah Poston, Christen Rainer and Fered Yousuf and staff member Sara April. They are joined on the trip by a group of high school students from Alaska.
County Line Pet Hospital is hosting an adoption event from noon to 4 p.m. June 4 its Steger location at 3312 Chicago Road.
County Line’s Spring Fling Puppy Prom includes booths featuring items from local vendors, several rescue agencies with adoptable dogs on hand as well as all of the adoptable animals at County Line, including unclaimed strays taken in by area police departments.

“Our kennels are very full and we’d love to get some of these dogs loving forever homes,” said Gianna Bianchi, of County Line.
Food and raffles also will be available at the June 4 event, which will take place rain or shine.
The District 230 Foundation, based in Orland Park, received a Those Who Excel Award in the team category at the 49th annual Illinois State Board of Education Awards ceremony for its work to support and positively impact the students at Sandburg, Stagg and Andrew high schools.
According to the State Board of Education, the awards “celebrate incredible classroom teachers, administrators, teams, volunteers, and school support personnel who have made lasting impacts on the students, families, and fellow educators in their school communities.”
State Sen. Napoleon Harris will be host a men’s panel at a Father’s Day event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 11 at Beggars Pizza, 369 E. 147th St., Harvey. The panel will discuss “Health, Wealth and Fatherhood” with an aim to provide insightful and actionable information to fathers who want to improve their lives and the lives of their families, according to a news release.
Planned panel participants include attorney Jeffrey Leving, Northwestern University professor Adam Murphy, scientist Anthony Williams, and real estate mogul Mark Buford.
