Almost a decade after the original Lord of War movie, it’s now been announced that Nicolas Cage will be reprising his role as illegal arms dealer Yuri Orlov in the upcoming sequel, Lords of War. Cage is joined by Bill Skarsgård, who most recently starred as the main antagonist in John Wick: Chapter 4. Cage’s character Yuri Burlov is inspired by former Soviet military officer Viktor Bout, the real-life “Merchant of Death,” who recently made headlines in a prisoner exchange for WNBA star Brittney Griner.
In Lords of War, Orlov (Nicolas Cage), the world’s most notorious gunrunner, discovers that he has a son, Anton (Skarsgård) who is trying to outdo him. Anton looks to build a mercenary army to fight in America’s Middle East conflicts, triggering a bitter rivalry that pits father against son.
“There is so much more to explore with these characters,” says the original writer and director Andrew Niccol via Variety. “Plato said it best — ‘Only the dead have seen the end of war.’ I’m looking forward to spending more time in the company of the charming devil that is Yuri Orlov and now his illegitimate son — who turns out to not be legitimate in any way.”
Lords of War is set to begin production this Fall backed principally by Vendôme Group. Stay tuned for more details to emerge in the coming months.
