RM Sotheby’s is slated to auction off Hollywood legend Steve McQueen‘s 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 at auction this summer. This is not the first time the classic and elegant, long-nosed coupe has hit the auction block, previously selling at RM Auction in 2014.
The late great actor was known for driving his Ferrari classics and while he had a daily drive with his 1963 Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta Lusso, he was also a proud owner of the Ferrari 275 GTB/4. Known as the King of Cool of the late ’60s, his vehicles of choice lived up to the name and have been a quintessential part of his overall aesthetic.
The front-engined Ferrari 275 GTB/4 is considered by many to be the quintessential coupe. The car’s bodywork is by Carrozzeria Scaglietti rather than Pininfarina like Ferrari’s original 275 models. With a top speed of 166.5mph, the car also comes equipped with a four-cam, 3.3-liter Colombo V-12 engine, different from the two-cam configuration of its predecessors. From 1966 to 1968, Ferrari produced just 280 examples of the car, making it exceedingly rare. McQueen reportedly received the car on set of Bullitt and was originally finished in gold metallic paint.
McQueen owned the car for four years and changed time many times before ending up with a retired Australia racer in the 2000s. Known as The Prancing Horse, it was meticulously restored to McQueen’s original specifications by Ferrari Classiche between 2010 and 2013. The car is expected to sell between $5 million to $7 million USD. In 2014, at the RM Auctions sale, the car sold for $10 million USD.
