Elon Musk has bought 10,000 GPUs (graphics processing units) for a new project, according to a new report from Business Insider. The Twitter CEO is apparently working on a generative AI venture at the company designed to rival ChatGPT.
While the exact details of the project have yet to be revealed, Musk recently recruited people in the AI space to join the Twitter team, poaching talent from
DeepMind. A source familiar with the situation told Business Insider that the project involves a large language model (LLM) and is still in the early planning stage. The purchase, however, points more clearly to a dedicated commitment to producing the rumored AI.
Musk reportedly spent tens of millions of dollars on the GPUs, an eyebrow-raising move given Twitter’s precarious financial position. The company has let go over half of its workforce since Musk took the reins and taken drastic measures to reduce costs, including closing down data centers and shuttering entire departments.
In other tech news, Apple is reportedly adding a touchscreen feature to AirPod cases.
