Want to know the secret to flying private for less? Look for so-called “empty legs.” In simple terms, an empty leg is when an aircraft flies without passengers to position itself for another flight or a return to its base. Naturally, these routes are costly for the carrier as they are not earning revenue. So jet companies will often sell these legs at a substantial discount, usually around 50% off the full charter price. Prices for turboprop, for instance, can be as low as $370 per person or around $600 for a jet on a short route—such as London to Paris.
