Phaidon Explores the History of Art During the Rise of the Internet

With the world so interconnected as it is in the present day, it’s difficult to think of a time before the internet. Where communication was largely made through letters, faxes or telephone calls, or when artists relied heavily on in-person exhibitions and gallerists to market their work. Phaidon will release a new book that documents the rise of the World Wide Web (WWW) and how it has cultivated a new breed of artists across analog and digital experiences.

Written and edited by Egyptian artist Omar Kholeif, the book takes a deep dive into the moments that have defined art within the digital age — from the birth of the WWW in 1989 by British scientist Tim Berners-Lee, to showcasing the work of legendary artists, such as Lawrence Abu Hamdan, Nam June Paik and Heather Phillipson, to the rise of NFTs and what is perhaps in store for the future.

Internet_Art : From the Birth of the Web to the Rise of NFTs is a hardcover title that spans 296 pages, including 75 illustrations. The book is available to preorder for $39.95 USD via Phaidon and will begin shipping on April 23.
