OMRON Robotics has just updated its table tennis-playing robot the FORPHEUS. Short for “Future OMRON Robotics technology for Exploring Possibility of Harmonized aUtomation with Sinic theoretics,” the FORPHEUS is now in its seventh generation. Born from the question, “Can a human beat a machine?,” the Forpheus has been improved over several generations with scary results.
The FORPHEUS is now able to self-diagnose any errors it is making against its opponent, self-adjust for accuracy, and adapt. When playing doubles, the FORPHEUS is able to empathize with its teammate by analyzing motions and inferred emotions in order to bring out the best situation in a team match.
