In Search of New Fashion Inspo for 2023? Ditch Your Trousers and Show Your Knickers

In Search of New Fashion Inspo for 2023? Ditch Your Trousers and Show Your Knickers

Looking to flex your fashion credentials at the start of 2023? Then it’s time to ditch the trousers. Yes, really. The emerging trend of the season is to lose your bottoms in favour of wearing just a pair of tights or simply showing off your underwear sans leg coverage. Before you think we’ve had one too many Baileys over New Year, let us enlighten you. And trust us, it’s actually kind of chic.

The trouserless trend was a regular at the spring/summer 23 catwalks, which pave the way for fashion inspiration for the coming season. And the trend has already been adopted by a handful of celebrities. Take, for example, the Bottega Veneta show. Creative Director Matthieu Blazy layered a chunky knit over a white top and paired it with black briefs, tights, and pointed heels. No trousers, skirt, or bottom half coverage in sight. Fast forward a few weeks and model Kendall Jenner stepped out in this exact look.

Victoria Beckham made hosiery centre stage for her spring/summer 23 show, too, albeit with a decidedly more formal twist. The fashion designer teamed black lace patterned tights with a bralet, longline blazer, and ankle-strap heels. A look that could be coming to an office near you soon . . . maybe. TV presenter Rochelle Humes then took a smart, yet glamorous approach for The Fashion Awards in December, choosing a bardot blazer with added embellishment at the hem by Celia Kritharioti teamed with a pair of tights and patent heels. The sparkling tassels may have covered her underwear, but the hip-length blazer highlighted those missing trousers.

Fashion house Del Core opted to reveal a little more with its trouserless look on the runway. A black high neck bodysuit teamed with thigh-high stockings left a slither of skin on show. Playing with proportions, a maxi trench coat was added over the top to give the ensemble a ‘just-running-errands’ feel (in a supermodel, high-fashion way, of course). While French fashion brand Coperni ditched the tights all together in favour of high-waisted knickers and bare legs, teamed with formal shirts and blazers up top.

Bella Hadid was first to the trend, spotted strolling the New York streets in September exposing her baggy pants. Wearing a pair of white boxer briefs with bare legs, bomber jacket, and those mini Uggs that went viral last year, the model somehow made it work. While Kylie Jenner merged the looks at Paris Fashion Week by wearing white elasticated Loewe logo briefs over a pair of semi-sheer tights to accentuate the underwear-as-outerwear aesthetic.

While we have been used to seeing exposed thongs of late (we’re looking at you, Dua Lipa and Hailey Bieber), and have seen a lot of knickers under naked dresses (Rita Ora springs to mind), the feel of the trouserless trend is altogether more refined. Yes, underwear is still on show, but legs are the star. Whether clad in hosiery or left bare, no swathes of fabric can be found floating around your bottom half leaving your silhouette clear to see.

Read ahead to get some inspiration for 2023’s trouserless trend. Our advice is to opt for a higher denier of hosiery to start with while the temperature is chilly and you get used to intentionally leaving the house without trousers. We’re predicting big things for the trouserless trend in 2023, but will you dare to bare your briefs? Or think trousers are too jean-ius to leave behind?
