Christian Marclay Brings His Sound Explorations to Centre Pompidou

Centre Pompidou just closed its highly touted exhibition on Gérard Garouste, but visitors to the unorthodox Parisian building can still look forward to a suite of promising shows, such as an exciting solo exhibition by Swiss-American artist Christian Marclay.

The eponymously titled show features the core of Marclay’s oeuvre — a fusion of sound and fine art that echoes the artist’s way of thinking through large-scale installations, sculpture and multi-media works. The collection of work goes back to his early days repurposing recycled vinyl records, to a series of contorted sculptures, such as Prosthesis (2000), and immersive video works made within the last decade — from Surround Sounds (2014-2015) to Subtitled (2019).

Marclay also worked with Snap‘s proprietary Landmarker technology to animate the museum’s iconic exterior. By scanning the QR code, visitors will transform the building’s facade into a musical instrument and experience Playing Pompidou — an interactive audio and visual AR experience that can be enjoyed in front of the institution or anywhere in the world.

Complementing the exhibition is a new monograph on the artist published by JRP Editions and available to purchase for $47 USD. Christian Marclay is on view at Centre Pompidou until February 27.

In case you missed it, there is a new exhibition that explores the evolution of Piet Mondrian.
