Weezer has dropped the last installment in their year-long SZNZ EP series. Winter is an exploration of how far the band has come in the decades since its formation in 2022.
While Winter was initially supposed to be an acoustic and stripped-back record, the project transformed over the course of its recording, with assistance from producers Suzy Shinn and James Flanigan. Tracks such as “Sheraton Commander” mirror the orchestral elements of Weezer’s latest album OK Human, while the guitar-heavy “The Deep and Dreamless Sleep” is reminiscent of the band’s sound on 2014’s Everything Will Be Alright In The End.
The release of Winter was preceded by the first song “I Want A Dog,” which the rock band performed live on Jimmy Kimmel earlier this month.
SZNZ is an interesting experiment in sound, time and the ever-evolving discography of a rock band, especially for one that goes as far back as Weezer. Over the course of the Winter, Autumn, Spring and Summer EPs, Weezer created the music in real-time. Frontman Rivers Cuomo even shared a spreadsheet documenting each EPs influences and “vibes.”
