Rage Against the Machine’s Tim Commerford Reveals Prostate Cancer Diagnosis

Rage Against the Machine bassist Tim Commerford revealed in a new interview with Spin that he’s been living with prostate cancer amid the band’s recent reunion. The 54-year-old said that he’s currently doing well after receiving treatment earlier this year. “I hope there’s one person who reads this and is like, ‘Fuck, I need to get checked out’ when they find out about it,” he said.

Commerford told Spin that he had his prostate removed two months before Rage Against the Machine started their reunion tour in July. Only his band mates and a small circle of confidants were aware of his diagnosis, he said. In October, Rage Against the Machine canceled their 2023 North American Tour, after bandleader Zack de la Rocha severely tore his Achilles tendon at the second show of the tour.

Although the band first announced a reunion run in early 2020, the pandemic delayed the jaunt with Run the Jewels multiple times. While finally on tour, the group donated $475,000 of proceeds from shows in Chicago and East Troy, Wisconsin to reproductive rights organizations.

Outside of Rage Against the Machine, Tim Commerford has been recording with his band 7D7D. The group recently released its debut single, “Capitalism.”
