James Cameron Says ‘Avatar 4’ Script Did Not Receive a Single Note From Studio Executives

As the release date for Avatar: The Way of Water nears, director James Cameron is already looking forward to the third and fourth sequel of the Avatar franchise.

In the weeks leading up to the release of the second Avatar film, it was previously reported that the movie is on track to opening upwards of $150 million USD and has since received an overwhelming number of positive reviews from early critics. Speaking to Collider, Cameron is already has plans for the fourth installment. He revealed that his script for Avatar 4 has become the first Avatar sequel that did not receive a single note from studio executives. The director said,

“I can’t tell you the details, but all I can say is that when I turned in the script for 2, the studio gave me three pages of notes. And when I turned in the script for 3, they gave me a page of notes, so I was getting better.

When I turned in the script for 4, the studio executive, and creative executive over the films wrote me an email that said, ‘Holy f**k.’ And I said, ‘Well, where are the notes?’ And she said, ‘Those are the notes.’ Because it kind of goes nuts in a good way, right?”

Cameron has already written and finalized the scripts for all four planned Avatar films. Earning rave reactions as the first sequel out of the gate, The Way of Water is slated to arrive in theaters next week. Earlier last month, Cameron said that despite having three additional sequels ready, if Avatar 2 is a flop, the third installment could be the last film of the series.

Avatar: The Way of Water hits theaters on December 16.
