The highly anticipated The First Slam Dunk anime film has opened in Japanese box offices with great success. Currently ranked No.1 in the domestic market, the animated film adaptation of the manga was screened at 40 IMAX cinemas and 34 Dolby Atmos cinemas where it raked in ¥1,295,808,780 JPY ($9.50 million USD) from 847,000 ticket sales.

While The First Slam Dunk has dethroned Makoto Shinkai’s Suzume no Tojimari in weekend performance, now resting in second place in its fourth weekend, it failed to top Suzume‘s ¥1,880,000,000 JPY ($13.7 million USD) weekend opener. As of writing this, Suzume no Tojimari has pulled in a total of $55.7 million USD in ticket sales.
