A recent episode on Sportsnet’s 32 Thoughts: The Podcast has sparked a rumor that Canadian crooner The Weeknd might just be joining actor Ryan Reynolds in his quest to acquire the Ottawa Senators NHL team.
Canadian sports commentators Ron MacLean joked about the deal and hosted Elliotte Friedman and Jeff Marek to discuss the genuine possibility. Not too long ago, Reynolds expressed serious interest in buying the team, even paying them a visit at one of their games. Friedman commented on the chance of two Canadian superstars going in on the deal stating, “I don’t think we’ve heard the end of this when it comes to star power. I don’t think Reynolds is the only one.” He also added, “But, you know, the one thing about him, he’s from Scarborough. He has some representation that has tie-ins to Ottawa. At least two of his representatives — well, they were born overseas and moved to Canada and have connections to Ottawa. So, you know, we’ll see, Jeff. I don’t know that it’s true, I don’t know that it isn’t. But that rumor is out there. I’ve heard there’s the potential to be more. And Ron [MacLean] made the joke and a couple people started texting me — like, are you hinting that The Weeknd could buy into the Ottawa Senators? I don’t know that that’s going to happen.”
So far, Reynolds is the only Canadian star who has publically voiced his interest in owning the NHL team. This would not be his first foray into sports, as he owns a stake in Wrexham Football Club.
